BLACK BASEBALL CAP

SELG baseball cap in black
SELG baseball cap woven motif, not a transfer
An item added earlier in 2008 to the existing range of items bearing the SELG logo (e.g. polo shirts and sweaters) was our very fetching baseball cap, in black only (so as not to show the dirt!).

The cap is of very good quality with a woven logo. No transfers here to peel off. Bearing in mind its excellence of manufacture and that profits go directly to the support of the locomotives, the cap can be yours for the very supportive sum of £9-50 inc. P&P. If you wish to obtain one, send your order as detailed below in the sections covering the CD's and DVD.

Mid - Norfolk Diesel Gala
Spring 2007
MNR Diesel Gala 2007 front cover

The Mid-Norfolk Railway's Spring 2007 Diesel Gala saw the launch into traffic of the ‘Stratford 47 Group’s 47596 “Aldeburgh Festival”. 47596 was superbly turned out in newly applied BR blue “Stratford” livery, including the depot's signature silver roof.

The SELG were approached to send one of the Cromptons, made easier by the fact that 33065 was going to be at the Nene Valley a just a week or so before the "required by". 33065 'Sealion' duly went to the Nene for a short spell before transfering to the Mid-Norfolk where it took part in the very successful gala and stayed at the Mid-Norfolk for a further three weeks, getting involved in regular passenger operations and an SELG Charter, on March 30th 2007.

This DVD features footage from the 2007 MNR event, filmed by Mid-Norfolk Railway volunteer David Roe.

The DVD is £13 including postage and packing. Proceeds from the sale of the disc will assist in the ongoing maintainance and support of our two Cromptons.

CD : SEVERN - SOLENT SUNSET II
Bristol - S.Wales loco-hauled 1987/8

SSS2 CD cover

69 minutes, 36 tracks : this the 2nd volume, with yet more examples of loco-hauled, Severn-Solent services but also supported with a few of the other remaining loco-hauled trains in S.Wales at the time (Worcester, Glasgow and Liverpool) plus some of the freight passing or running in/out of Severn Tunnel Jcn.. Building on 'Severn Solent Sunset', released on an unsuspecting public in Aug/04 (SEE FURTHER DOWN PAGE), it is highly unlikely there will be a SSS3, so it would be a shame to miss out some of the 'other' traction to be heard in the late 80s.

As is customery on CDs these days, a few bonus tracks are included, the selection here outlining the closure of Severn Tunnel Jcn. yards on 10/11th Oct.'87. Track 33 will DEFINATELY rattle a few windows and light fittings. Essential 'playing' to get your own back on noisy neighbours! (However, the SELG would much rather you got on with your neighbours and good will to all men etc. etc.)

All recordings are by the very same "skilled sound engineer" as SSS1, originally for personal consumption and as a record of the closing chapter of loco-hauled stock on the South Wales - Pompeys while capturing the last months/days of STJ in the strategic freight network.

Passenger locos featured include 33006/10/11/13/26/29/30/33/38/48/51/57/59/110/207, 37426, 50015/20/28/34/37 & 45.

Support from the freight side is provided by 31113/127/208, 37198/241/692/799, 47123/156/316 & 56068. .

A double-sided, A4 info sheet is included with the CD, detailing each track (sorry, no photos on this one). The sheet can be viewed/downloaded by CLICKING HERE [120k PDF file].

  • Compact Disc : SEVERN - SOLENT SUNSET 1987/8
    Bristol - S.Wales loco-hauled

    SSS CD cover

A 76-minute, 33-track CD of loco-hauled, Severn-Solent services recorded between the Spring of 1987 and the end of the Winter timetable in May 1988 by one of the founding members of the SELG, originally as a personal record of the closing chapter of loco-hauled stock on the South Wales - Pompeys.

Recordings were made from the lineside around Severn Tunnel Jcn., the platforms of Newport and Temple Meads stations and also on board the MK1 stock. One such trip was the last passenger fling of 33013, initially in fine form but then struggling from Pilning to Severn Tunnel Junc. at a snail's pace until rescued by 37254. It is included here, subject to editing, bringing the essence of that extra-ordinary journey.

    Passenger locos featured include 33002/3/8/10/13/21/27/28/31/39/59/64/65/110/119/205, 37254/427/430, 45143, 47584, 50005/7/9/21/29 & 46.

    2-page info sheet

Some of the locos are still with us today whilst others have since departed for that MPD in the sky and thus consigned to the railway history books.

A number of the thirty three tracks retain the incidental sounds of a working railway; station announcements as performed live by the station staff, rather than the pre-recorded stuff today, the guard quoting why 33013 wasn't so well and the trolley girl serving coffees! Not to mention enthusiasts celebrating, vocally, as particular services bow out. Examples of contemporary freight traffic are also kept in the mix, as the passenger workings pass by. These locomotives, e.g 37202, 37212 & 47613, are highlighted on the CD info sheet in most cases.

The info sheet, with some colour illustrations (taken at the time of the respective recordings), is included, but can be downloaded by CLICKING HERE [250k PDF file].

    • Track 8 - 33065 departs Newport station.
    • Track 16 - 50007 arrives at Severn Tunnel Jcn. station.
    • Track 20 - 37430 begins its stiring departure from Bristol T.M.
    • Track 22 - At Bristol T.M., 33119 buffers up and applies some power.

Compact Disc : CLASS 33 FLEET PROFILE

    Sleeve of 'Fleet Survey' CD

In Feb. 1997 a member of the Class 33 Locomotive Club (since disbanded) assembled a detailed document on all 98 'Cromptons', with emphasis on the post-1980 era. This was released as an A4 binder entitled "THE CLASS 33, 1960-1997,THE FLEET PROFILE". All proceeds from sales passing to the 33046 Fund (renamed S.E.L.G. in 2000). Since 1997, there have been many changes to the fleet with many sold to new owners and a few broken up (or both).

Now on CD in MS WORD format, this updated version has all the important changes up to July 2004 as well as all the information in the 1997 edition. This includes BRCW works numbers, mods and restrictions, livery and sector changes with approx. dates in most cases, works visits and major overhauls since the early 1980's, accident damage (of which there were many, too many some might say!), last known passenger workings, disposal and/or status.

Available for £7.50 each, including post and packaging, despatch your order to the same address as for the Severn - Solent Sunset audio CD, above, not forgeting to include your delivery and email addresses.

    S.E.L.G. MUG

For the avid collector of the white, half-pint, hot beverage vessel, then here is just the thing; the S.E.L.G.'s very own tea/coffee mug.....as featured briefly on the BBC TV programme, "Beeching's Tracks" (the episode with Edwina Currie presenting, broadcast in Nov/08, I think. Around the 3min 30sec mark). At home in any railwayman's cabin or restroom, you can be a proud owner of one such drinking vessel for the princely sum of £4. The mug comes complete with a handle and is resistant to light-hearted banter from steam enthusiasts and intermittent exposure to soapy water. One snag though, we're not overly keen on dispatching them through the mail, so you'll have to pick one up at the Spa Valley Railway, next time you're down.

Rumour has it, if one of our mugs has taken a trip down the line in the cab of '63 or '65, you can still hear the sound of an 8-cylinder Sulzer, should the mug be offered to your ear (in the interests of H&S, it is recommended the mug is empty). However, the conch-like properties of our mugs may only be wishful thinking and over-hyped sales pitch!! There's only one way to find out....
